Trail Insights: Diving into Six-Months of Trail Counter Data

We are thrilled to share a six-month update on our PAS Trail Counter Data initiative. Last summer, in collaboration with the Pisgah Conservancy, Back Country Horsemen of Pisgah, and Transylvania County TDA, we acquired three trail counters to help us better understand the impacts of recreation. These devices mark the beginning of a journey filled with valuable insights into trail usage across different areas of the forest.

Our trail counters go beyond the numbers as they share the story of trail usage by distinguishing user types and directions. Today, we present three informative charts highlighting trail user activity in the areas of Black Mountain, Turkey Pen, and Fish Hatchery. The trail users analyzed are mountain bikers, hikers, and equestrians. These charts show the patterns of trail users entering from one point and exiting at another.

As we dive into these initial insights, we eagerly anticipate the full year of data ahead. This will allow us to analyze usage trends and make meaningful comparisons with previous years, enhancing our understanding of the trails we love to recreate. Keep an eye out for updates throughout the year on how this data affects our work.
