Went around room with introductions
-Donations. We received a donation from Pisgah Productions for providing a few volunteers at Monster Cross. Also received a donation from Pisgah Map Company. Kelly Smith presented at the meeting her donation to the trail crews of 24 hard hats.
Chris S announced that at the IMBA World Summit that the new sponsored volunteer agreement with the Pisgah National Forest Service was discussed with IMBA staff, land managers and other chapters worldwide.
Trace Ridge Project, Greg Liester met up with some folks from the Backcountry Horsemen to talk about and start on the reroute project of Trace Ridge. This project has been made a priority by the forest service. Last Saturday work started and approximately 400 feet were roughed in. There is another work day on the 20th and a few more planned following. The work day planned on November 11th with be followed by a volunteer appreciation day celebration.
Bike parks. Thad Walker gave us an update of what is developing with bike parks. The eventual goal is to build bike parks in Hendersonville, Asheville and Brevard. We have an MOU with Hendersonville and are currently working on resolving floodplain issues with the city. Also the Chicken Hill/River Arts District in Asheville is being thoroughly looked at in Asheville in conjunction with the WeCan group. A previously discussed area under I-240 is being looked at along with other possibilities. The upcoming New Belgium Brewery should be able to help this project move forward. Chris S. mentioned he was at a session on bike parks at the World Summit and that a couple of things to keep in mind is that most bike parks fail due to lack of progress and becoming “stale” to the public.
Trail maintenance planning. We currently have an opening for another trail crew leader. There is a sawyer recertification class coming up. Crew leaders will meet with the forest service on November 13th and will be updated with trail priorities other than Trace Ridge. We were able to add 8 more people to our volunteer roster list upping the total to about 150 volunteers for the Pisgah Forest District.
Jeff Keener, our membership director, has been setting up at different events by area bike shops to promote us. He recently was at the Cannondale Demo brought by Youngblood Bicycles held at Richmond Hill along with The HUB’s Fall Fiesta. Our current membership is around 220.
