Many of the nation’s top downhill mountain bikers will be headed to Beech Mountain for USA Cycling’s Mountain Bike Gravity National Championships next week.
The race, which will be held July 20-22, will crown male and female national champions in a variety of categories for both amateurs and professionals.
Last year, Beech Mountain Resort became the first facility in the Southeast to host USAC Gravity Nationals, and the competitors loved the course.
“We’re anticipating at least 500 competitors,” said Talia Freeman, marketing director for Beech Mountain Resort. “People will come in from all over the country. It’s a major event.”
The field will include dozens of amateurs and professionals from across the Carolinas, as well as the world’s top-ranked downhill mountain biker – Aaron Gwin of Morongo Valley, Calif.
“The level of competition is absolutely incredible,” said pro Ryan Taylor of Candler. “The fastest guy in the world on a downhill mountain bike will be in Beech Mountain. It’s really impressive.”
Mountain biking fans are encouraged to come out and watch. The courses at Beech are challenging and spectator-friendly, and there’s no charge for admission.
“Saturday is a great day to come. That’s when we host the dual slalom races, so you’re watching pro competitors go head-to-head to win the national championship,” Freeman said. “We had a Saturday turnout of at least 2,500 people last year.”
Also on Saturday, race goers can enjoy the second annual Brews & Views Beer Fest, which features live music, more than 40 craft beers, fun activities and a children’s play village.
“These championships have definitely put us in the national spotlight,” said Ryan Costin, Beech Mountain Resort general manager. “The level of riding we’ve seen here has been overwhelming. We feel very grateful to be able to host this event.”
